Durham Challenge Cup Success25 Years on from winning the Vase Final at Wembley their last major trophy success,Whickham not only reached the Durham Challenge Cup Final for the first time in their history but won it by defeating 1st division Billingham Synthonia in the final at New Ferens Park home of Durham City. The goals came courtesy of two late strikes from a Kenny Boyle header to equalise, then a close range finish from Ian Robson to give Whickham a 2-1 win. The final whistle was met with scenes of sheer elation after an enexpected victory. Probabley the most poignant moment came when skipper Kris Holmes presented the Durham Challenge Cup to long serving chairman Jack Gilbert who emotionally accepted the magnificent trophy. Whickham's Steve Robinson was unanimously voted Man of the Match for his valiant and at times brilliant display in the Whickham goal, an award he received at last years presentations. Whickham join an illustriuos list of who's who of County Durham football and our success is proof that the underdog can win now and again.
